The Speed of Change

|
Teaching for Our Times.
We live in a world that is currently undergoing the fastest rate of change in recorded history. Our times are marked by extremely rapid metamorphoses in clothing fashions, political regimes, cultural trends, and technology. What does this mean for the teaching profession?
There are those who say that teachers should prepare students for a future world of ever increasing technological influence by exposing them to more and more technological gadgets during school. Others say that students of the future will do fine assimilating new ways to do old chores - the best form of preparation teachers can give is to remember the things that remain important throughout time.
Are the values today so different? Does happiness come from new things? Let's stop and think about this. If you are a teacher, then teach yourself this: there is a way to know what makes a successful, happy individual. In this next lesson we will examine just this.
And remember, you are not just teaching information - you are transforming individuals to find themselves. So aim for the best things in life, and “Hold fast to your dreams, for without them life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly.” - Langston Hughes

Change is the only constant. Things keep changing. Life doesn't seem to stay still.
I say, the Speed of Change is increasing. So it looks like you can do one of three things about this.
- Disagree. Look at our times and say that they are not changing faster.
- Wonder. Wonder what is coming.
- Observe. It's easy to see what's going on, if you look - really look - at our times.
The fact is that technology is changing faster and faster. Clothes styles are, too. Hair styles, music, banks, and governments are, too. Our lives have smaller and smaller amounts of time between things. We speak faster, listen faster, think faster, and leave less time for each other. Look up a timeline of the progress of humankind's civilization for the last 8,000 years (we apparently began writing the record of history about 5,000 BC) and you will see shorter and shorter timespans between major societal and technological changes.

The Wall
It may be that we cannot go faster than a certain speed. Maybe there is a SPEED LIMIT.
If we hit an upper speed - a wall, then the question is ... what is on the other side of the wall?
- Will we still use technology?
- Will we still have electricity?
- Will we still use cars?
- Will we eat differently?
- Will we be the same people we are today?
TASK: Write a quiz question in reMember Mate® about a fact about the wall.

Top Ten Moments
What are some of the best moments in your life?
We are going to try to name just a few of them. To help you, here are some starter questions.
- Were you with someone?
- Were you at home?
- Did someone say something?
- Did something happen that surprised you?
- Can you still see the details of this moment?
List some of your top ten moments in your life in your mind, or speak them, or write them.
Now, notice things in common in these moments. As you experienced them ...
- Were you in the moment or thinking about the moment?
- Were you with the same person more than once?
- Was there anything else that is the same in more than one of these moments?
My wife is in several of my top ten. One is when I met her. One is when I drove her to college. One is when we agreed to get married. One is when we had our baby daughter. One is when she said she loves me, last June. You have to meet her. But enough about me - how about you?

The List of Everything
Say that we hit the wall. We cannot change any faster. We stop everything and say, "Just one minute!" We throw out everything we do now - even our favorite things. Then we rebuild. We start by doing only those things which are the most important things we value. What are the most important things in your life?
- First, think of EVERYTHING that is now your favorite things.
- Out of EVERYTHING, make a list of 5 things you would definitely keep on the other side of the wall.
- Out of EVERYTHING, make a list of 5 things you would definitely leave on the this side of the wall.
